Intro to Band Course (BAB10S)
New Course Offering for 2021/2022 School Year: Intro to Band (BAB10S)
Intro to Band is available to any high school student of any grade, who has little or no experience in instrumental music. It is a fast-paced course designed to prepare students for entry into the RDPC Band Program who have not previously completed the Junior High Band program. Students will learn basic music literacy, theory, and instrumental performance skills in the context of a Concert Band. Students will choose one of the following instruments to receive instruction on: Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet or Trombone. Upon successful completion of this course, it is intended that students will be prepared to enter the RDPC performing band ensembles, and students wishing to do so will be strongly encouraged to enroll in them in the subsequent semester.
Students will be required to acquire a concert band instrument. In cases where students are unable to acquire an instrument themselves for any reason, please contact the instructor. We are able to loan a limited number of instruments out from the school, though supply and choice are limited.
Students enrolled in Intro to Band will require a wind instrument for use during the course, and should be prepared to bring it on the first day of class in September. Instruments are available for Rent or Purchase from Music Stores, and more information is available about these options below. Instruments are often posted for sale online, such as on the Thompson Music Parents Facebook page, but care should be taken when purchasing a used instrument to ensure the instrument is in good playing condition.
What instruments can I choose from?
Intro to Band students can choose from the following wind instruments:
Need help picking an instrument to play?
In a traditional year, we would be hosting Instrument Trial and Rental nights for our incoming Grade 6 Band students in June, but due to the ongoing pandemic, we are expecting that startup to take place in the Fall of 2021, which is too late for students entering the Intro to Band Course.
If you have registered for the course, and would like some help picking an instrument to play, please contact us before the end of the school year, and we will help in any way that we can, given the current state of pandemic restriction.
Where can I rent or buy instruments?
If you've chosen what you want to play, the next step is to order your instrument. We recommend Long & McQuade Music, and St. John's Music:
Long & McQuade Music
L&M Rental Prices for 2020/2021
1845 Pembina Hwy - Winnipeg
Long & McQuade Music Rentals
St John's Music
1130 Portage Ave - Winnipeg
St. John's Music Rentals
**If ordering online, we strongly recommend ordering from St. Johns or Long & McQuade. You will find a lot of “bargains” online, but these low-priced instruments are almost always made of weak materials, their moving parts are likely to bend or break, and they are not repairable. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.**
When should I order my instrument?
Right away! You will need it for the first day of class in September, so don't delay.
Are there instruments available for loan through the School?
We don't want financial need to limit your opportunity to take part in the Band program. If you are not able to rent or purchase an instrument, please contact the course instructor as soon as possible. We do have a small inventory of instruments available for loan, however supply and choice are limited. Students will need their instruments for the first day of class in September, so please plan ahead and contact us before Summer Holidays.
